The prestigious Doncaster Education City project represents one of the largest investments into education in the UK.
Developed in line with the Doncaster Urban Renaissance Masterplan, the scheme sympathetically links with the existing urban fabric whilst creating a contemporary architectural addition to the skyline. As the first major development along Doncaster's Waterfront both the architectural and landscape interventions were required to be of the highest design quality - thus setting a benchmark for future projects.
Design principles for the spaces evolved through the Urban Design Framework to establish strong visual and physical links with the town centre and adjoining sites. The public realm sought to combine both the needs of the College and aspirations of the wider town for an attractive, safe, civic space in a waterside setting.
Successful delivery of the scheme was achieved by developing a close-working relationship with the design and build contractor and other members of the design team to ensure the vision was deliverable and within the defined budgetary constraints and timescales.
As a catalyst for regeneration, it was important the College set high standards for the subsequent development of the area. Accordingly, the design philosophy enforced a high level of sustainable detail throughout the development. The design leads by example with its high quality materials and approach to sustainability. Sensitive integration of a contemporary lighting scheme would ensure the vibrant secure environment was maintained.
