Pontefract Town Centre Regeneration Strategy
Client: DTZ for Wakefield MDC
The Pontefract Town Centre Strategy forms Part of Yorkshire Forward's 'Five Towns Initiative', which also includes Castleford, Normanton, Featherstone and Knottingley
The overall objectives of the regeneration strategy for the Georgian/Mediaeval town centre of Pontefract was to stimulate tourism and make the town an attractive place to live. This objective was to build upon the excellent existing transport links.
The design strategy proposes a series of catalyst interventions along 'The Great Street' (Castleford to Pontefract Castle) to repair the historic fabric (in particular the medieval yards), improve connectivity and stimulate investment. The overall masterplan and strategy integrates with proposals for the adjacent Prince Of Wales Colliery site and 'Pontefract Ellipse'.
The masterplan and strategy development involved public consultation events.
The Pontefract Town Centre Strategy won in the open OJEU competition with DTZ.
